Chairperson and Chair of the CPD sub-committee - Mary Phelan

Mary Phelan lectures in Spanish and translation at the School of Applied Language and Intercultural Studies at Dublin City University (DCU) where she is the Chairperson of the MA in Translation Studies and the MSc in Translation Technology.

She is particularly interested in interpreter provision in garda stations, courts and hospitals in Ireland. Mary has carried out extensive research on the historical provision of interpreters in the courts, particularly for the Irish language, in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.

Honorary Secretary and Chair of the certification sub-committee - Miriam Watchorn

Miriam Watchorn is a graduate of Lille University, France and Dublin City University. She is a practising freelance translator for over 16 years and has extensive language training experience. She is currently a part-time lecturer on the MA in Translation Studies programme in DCU. Miriam is a Professional Member of the ITIA and an ITIA Certified Legal Translator (French to English).


Honorary Treasurer - Graziano Ciulli

Graziano Ciulli is a freelance translator from English into Italian and a Professional Member of the ITIA. He holds a postgraduate Diploma in Technical and Specialised Translation and an MA in Linguistics and Translation Studies from the University of Westminster (London), where he also taught technical translation as a visiting lecturer for several years. He is also a member of the Chartered Institute of Linguists (UK). 

Chair of the professional membership sub-committee - Annette Schiller

Annette Schiller is a Professional Member of the ITIA and an ITIA Certified Legal Translator (German to English). She has a BA (Mod) in French and Spanish from TCD, an MA in Translation Studies (German) from DCU and a Diploma in Legal Studies from DIT. She holds a PhD in Translation Studies from DCU. 

In addition to her work as a translator, she teaches on undergraduate and postgraduate translation studies programmes at DCU.   Annette is a member of the German translator and interpreter association BDÜ/Landesverband Bayern e.V. She is a former Chairperson of the ITIA. She is Vice-President of FIT Europe, the European regional centre of the Fédération Internationale des Traducteurs.


Ilaria Furlan

Ilaria Furlan is a Professional Member of the ITIA. She graduated in Translation and Interpretation at the SSLMIT Università di Trieste, Italy, in 2001. After a 3-year-long experience as an in-house translator in Milan, she moved to Ireland in 2005 and has since lived in Dublin, where she works as a free-lance translator and interpreter for Italian/English/Spanish and teaches Italian.


Editor of the ITIA Bulletin - Anne Larchet 

Anne Larchet has been working as a freelance interpreter of Spanish and English since 2008.  She has a BA (Hons) in Arabic and Spanish from UCD, a Graduate Diploma in Applied Languages and Intercultural Studies from DCU and a Certificate in Spanish law from The Law Society of Ireland. She was a scholarship student at the American University Cairo, Egypt. She has many years experience teaching Spanish and English as a Second Language in Ireland and Spain, and has worked in management in this field.



Chair of the marketing sub-committee - Susanne Dirks

Susanne is a qualified translator for German and English (Staatlich Geprüfte Übersetzerin, 1989) and an associate member of the ITIA. In addition to her qualifications as a translator, Susanne who came to Ireland in 1993, holds a First Class BSc (Hons) (Middlesex University) in Information Technology,  an MSc (Edinburgh University) in Artificial Intelligence and additional post-graduate certificates  in relation to e-marketing and web technologies.

Having spent the initial years of her career as a translator and translation/localisation project manager, Susanne then spent a considerable part of her career in international IT and business consulting and management roles.  In early 2013, Susanne decided to combine her different strands of experience – translation, IT, international consulting – and has set up her own business, e-Vorsprung Consultingm providing website translation, website localisation and optimisation, and e-marketing strategy and localisation consulting


Penelope Eades Alvarez

Penelope Eades Alvarez is a Professional Member of the ITIA and an ITIA Certified Legal Translator (Spanish to English). She has a BA in French and German from UCC and has worked as a translator for over three decades. 

Now based in Ireland, Penelope has lived in Berlin, Paris and Madrid. She worked with Tourism Ireland. She was  Director of Foreign Language Services for Spanish National Radio, (REE) and Spanish Delegate-Director of European Radio International, a current affairs broadcasting service operating from Brussels. She lectured at the CEU San Pablo University in Madrid. She recently set up her own translation agency, Translation Pros and continues to work as a translator. She is the Spanish Honorary Vice-Consul for the South-East.


Karl Apsel

Karl Apsel is a freelance translator (English - German), conference interpreter and Professional Member of the ITIA and the German translators’ and interpreters’ association BDÜ. He holds the Institute of Linguists Diploma in Translation (IoL DipTrans), a MA degree in Conference Interpreting from NUI Galway and Bachelor and Master degrees in Law from University of Limerick.

Originally from Cologne, Germany, Karl has worked in the translation industry in Ireland since 1995 – as project manager for high profile translation projects, including the translation services to the Irish government website during Ireland’s EU-Presidency 2004, and as freelance translator and interpreter. He has extensive experience in the areas of legal and financial translation and is also a member of Translators without Borders. Apart from his work as translator, Karl has provided consultancy services and lectured in law.


Lichao Li

Lichao Li is from China. With a BA in English Literature and a MA in Higher Education, he is a freelance Chinese teacher, a freelance translator and interpreter currently working in Ireland. He joined the ITIA three years ago and hopes to work with ITIA for many years to come. 


Ken Waide


Marina Bilak

Marina Bilak is a qualified translator for English and German. She obtained her postgraduate degree from the Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz, Germany (MA in Applied Linguistics and Cultural Studies, English and Russian). As highlights during her studies she enjoyed her time abroad in Edinburgh, Scotland and St Petersburg, Russia - getting to know the people and cultures. She came to Ireland in 1995 to work full-time for a localisation company in Dublin. From 1998 onwards she started to successfully navigate the challenges of being a self-employed translator into German, while not being based in Germany, and the various stages of bi-lingualism. She is an associate member of the ITIA. She has also attended events hosted by the ADÜ Nord in Northern Germany.
